Saturday 30 July – Sunday 4 September 2011

Portsmouth Historic Dockyard is home to three of the most famous warships in the world HMS Victory, HMS Warrior 1860 and the Mary Rose collection, but the site is more than that. It’s the social history about life on board and in the wider society that really captures the imagination and with that in mind all 6 attractions will be celebrating games and pastimes this summer!

The National Museum of the Royal Navy will once again transform Victory Arena for their Big Game Weekend, on Saturday 6th & Sunday 7th August, 11am 4.30pm as visitors of all ages are invited to join in the fun and games with an impressive giant game of the classic ‘Battleships’, quoits, bowls, ‘float a boat’, face painting, the traditional game of uckers and other naval favourites from throughout the ages. Plus, for the older members of the family there is the opportunity to see ‘Tokyo Rose’ with her Pacific war game in the Victory Gallery.

The National Museum of the Royal Navy are also set for a fantastic voyage through the fun filled stories and myths of sailors and the sea! Each week will provide a different tale, the chance to make things inspired by the story and to get your Story Book stamped to enter their special prize draw!

At Action Stations there are games a plenty and taking off in a helicopter and flying the Royal Marines into battle is something visitors will never forget. In fact, they might find it hard to remember it’s just a full size simulation – one of dozens of hands on activities (including the UK’s tallest indoor climbing tower, fitted with an automatic safety delay system) providing a taste of life in today’s Royal Navy. Plus, visitors to the InterACTION gallery can send a message by semaphore, complete the Tangram puzzle, complete the sliding puzzle & build a bridge, complete with competitions and certificates!

HMS Victory will be positively vibrant as every Thursday in August there will be fun activities inspired by traditional sailor crafts and pastimes from knots and ropes, make do and mend, scrimshaw carvings to the opportunity to make your own game to take home.

The Mary Rose Museum will be playing traditional games, many of them found on board the Mary Rose with hands on activities for all the family, free mystery objects quiz for children visiting the museum and the chance to try on a costume and look good Tudor style!

Celebrating 150 years of service HMS Warrior 1860 will be having fun at the Victorian Seaside with thirty officers and crew on board for a weekend of naval traditions (Saturday 30th & Sunday 31st July, 10am 4.30pm) and seaside entertainment including sea songs, knot tying, street entertainers, Punch & Judy show, games & pastimes plus children’s activities and workshops.

There are also family activity areas at the National Museum of the Royal Navy and new this summer is Warrior’s gunroom where young sailors can have some R&R including costumed roleplay, toys, games and colouring.

Explorers can also learn history in fun ways with costumed interpreters, games, dressing up, crafts, trails and talks. There’s also lots of space for children to explore in their own way, including indoor attractions to cater for that ever changing British weather!

Those with a more serious interest in naval matters have ample opportunities to discover more and our expert guides are on hand to help.

Plus, much needed refreshment is available in Costa Coffee, Boathouse 7 or the Georgian Tearooms and shops include national retailer Nauticalia, museum shops and Antiques Storehouse. Picnic areas are also available.

With all the added events, flexible family tickets for 5 (max 2 adults/seniors) with the validity of a year, plus a Harbour Tour; the Dockyard Apprentice and the Trafalgar Sail, Portsmouth Historic Dockyard is one of the best value, full day’s out in the UK!
